Laser Acne Treatment in Alexandria, VA

Fade acne marks, smooth acne scars, and calm breakout-prone skin — with laser technology that works beneath the surface.

For a lot of people, clearing active breakouts is only half the battle. The marks, discoloration, and textural scarring that acne leaves behind can linger for months — or years — long after the breakouts themselves have resolved. And for those still dealing with persistent or recurring acne, the cycle feels endless.

At Sasha Beauty Laser Center in Alexandria, we address both sides of that problem. Using the Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II, our laser specialists fade post-acne marks and discoloration, stimulate collagen remodeling in scarred skin, and help reduce the persistent inflammation that keeps acne-prone skin looking irritated even between breakouts.

It’s not a cure for acne — nothing is. But for clients who’ve tried topicals and prescription treatments and still aren’t seeing the skin they want, it’s a meaningful step forward. And unlike a lot of what’s out there, it comes with an honest assessment of what’s actually achievable for your skin.

What laser can actually do for acne-prone skin

There are two distinct things laser treatment addresses for acne clients, and it’s worth being clear about both.

Post-acne marks and scarring — this is where laser produces its most reliable and visible results. When a breakout heals, it often leaves behind two types of damage: flat discoloration (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH) and textural scarring from collagen disruption. The Clarity II targets post-acne marks directly — breaking up the excess pigment in dark spots the same way it treats other forms of pigmentation. For textural scarring, the laser stimulates collagen remodeling in the deeper layers of the skin, gradually improving surface texture over a series of sessions.

Active acne and inflammation — laser energy’s anti-inflammatory effect can help reduce the redness and severity of active breakouts in acne-prone clients, and many people notice fewer and less severe breakouts during and after a treatment series. This is a secondary benefit that varies by individual — it’s not the primary reason to pursue laser, but it’s a meaningful one for clients whose skin is still actively breaking out.

What laser acne treatment can improve

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the flat dark marks left after breakouts heal
  • Red or purple post-acne marks on lighter skin tones
  • Shallow acne scarring and textural irregularities
  • Overall skin tone and redness in acne-prone skin
  • Skin texture and pore appearance through collagen stimulation
  • The frequency and severity of breakouts in some clients

What it’s less suited for: Deep, pitted, or ice-pick acne scarring typically requires more aggressive resurfacing treatments. If that’s your primary concern, our team will discuss whether laser is the right starting point or whether a different approach makes more sense for your skin.

What to expect from your treatment

The consultation Our team will assess your skin — what type of acne marks or scarring you have, whether you’re still experiencing active breakouts, your skin tone, and your history with other treatments. They’ll also ask about any current skincare products or medications, some of which affect laser safety and timing. This is especially important for clients taking or recently finishing isotretinoin (Accutane), which requires a waiting period before laser treatment.

The treatment Sessions typically take 20 to 40 minutes depending on the treatment area. The Clarity II is passed over the skin, delivering pulses of targeted laser energy. Most clients describe it as a warm prickling sensation — generally well-tolerated without numbing. The built-in cryogen cooling system keeps the skin comfortable throughout.

After your session Mild redness and warmth in the treated area is normal and typically resolves within a few hours. Some clients experience a brief purging response — minor breakouts or surface congestion in the days immediately following treatment. This is a normal part of the process as the skin responds to the laser energy. Treated dark marks will often darken slightly before they begin to fade, similar to what happens with other pigmentation treatments.

Avoid active skincare ingredients — retinol, acids, and exfoliants — for a few days after treatment. Sun protection is essential throughout your treatment series.

When will you see results?

Post-acne marks and discoloration begin to fade over 4 to 6 weeks following each session as the body clears the broken-down pigment. Textural improvement from collagen remodeling builds gradually over the course of a treatment series and continues for several months after your final session.

For clients who experience a reduction in active breakouts, this often becomes noticeable after the second or third session.

How many sessions will you need?

The number of sessions depends on what you’re primarily treating:

  • Post-acne marks and PIH — typically 2 to 4 sessions
  • Textural scarring and collagen remodeling — typically 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart
  • Ongoing active acne with inflammation — typically part of a series, often combined with other approaches

Your specialist will give you a specific recommendation at your consultation based on your skin. Some clients combine laser with a chemical peel series or medical-grade facials for a more comprehensive approach to acne-prone skin.

Is laser acne treatment right for you?

This treatment is a strong option if you:

  • Have dark marks, PIH, or red post-acne discoloration that isn’t fading with topicals
  • Have shallow acne scarring that’s affecting your skin texture
  • Are dealing with persistent redness and inflammation from acne-prone skin
  • Have finished an Accutane course and are ready to address the marks and scarring left behind
  • Want to take a more active step than skincare alone

One important note: If you are currently taking isotretinoin (Accutane) or finished it within the last six months, laser treatment is not appropriate during that window. Please mention this at your consultation our team can advise on timing.

Before & after care

Every laser journey at Sasha Beauty starts with a free consultation. We’ll assess your skin type and tone, review your treatment history, and walk you through the options that make sense for your goals. There’s no pressure and no obligation — just a clear picture of what’s possible and what to expect.

From there, most treatments follow the same basic pattern: a short session (15–30 minutes for most areas), built-in cooling for comfort, and little to no downtime afterward. The number of sessions varies by treatment and individual factors — your specialist will give you a realistic plan at your consultation

Before your treatment

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least two weeks before your appointment. For hair removal specifically, shave the area 24 hours before — do not wax or pluck. Pause retinoids and active exfoliants 48–72 hours prior. Come to your appointment with clean skin, no makeup or lotion on the treatment area.

After your treatment

Apply SPF 30 or higher daily — protecting treated skin from UV exposure is the single most important thing you can do to protect your results. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours. You may experience mild redness or slight swelling that typically resolves within a few hours. Do not pick or scratch the treated area. Your specialist will give you any additional aftercare specific to your treatment.

Pair it with other treatments

For clients dealing with both acne scarring and overall skin tone concerns, pigmentation treatment and laser skin rejuvenation work well together. Medical-grade facials and chemical peels complement laser acne treatment by addressing surface congestion, pore health, and overall skin clarity. Your specialist will suggest a sequenced approach based on your skin at consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Laser can reduce inflammation and redness in acne-prone skin, and many clients notice fewer and less severe breakouts during a treatment series. However, it’s not a cure for acne, and results for active breakouts vary by individual. Where laser is most consistently effective is in fading the marks and improving the texture that acne leaves behind after healing.

Not during your course, and not for at least six months after finishing. Isotretinoin significantly changes how the skin responds to laser energy and increases the risk of adverse effects. Please mention this at your consultation so we can advise on the right timing for you.

It depends on what you’re primarily addressing. Post-acne marks typically respond in 2 to 4 sessions. Textural scarring generally requires 3 to 6 sessions over several months. Your specialist will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.

PIH is the flat dark discoloration — brown, red, or purple depending on your skin tone — that a pimple leaves behind after it heals. It’s not true scarring; it’s excess melanin deposited as part of the skin’s healing response. It fades on its own over time, but laser treatment significantly accelerates that process.

Some clients experience a brief purging response — minor surface congestion or small breakouts in the days immediately after a session. This is normal and resolves within a few days. Treated dark marks may also appear to darken briefly before they begin to fade. Both are signs the skin is responding to treatment, not signs something went wrong.

No meaningful downtime. You may see some redness and warmth for a few hours after treatment. A brief purging response is possible in the first few days. Most clients return to their normal day immediately, though we ask that you avoid retinol, acids, and exfoliants for a few days post-treatment, and that you wear SPF consistently throughout your treatment series.
